You may have had one or more dental crowns placed on your teeth long ago whether your teeth were damaged or you wanted you teeth to look more aesthetically pleasing. Or, your dentist may have advised you to get a crown now and you aren’t familiar with the procedure. Whatever your reason for asking, here are some of the most frequently asked questions about dental crowns.

Why do I need a crown after a root canal if my dentist is going to file my tooth down anyway?

While this may seem like an unnecessary step to protect a tooth that is technically “dead”, your dentist is trying to save as much of the structure of your tooth as possible. With other options, such as extraction or adding a bridge, there is no real anchor to the jaw bone. Only an implant will be anchored in place. With the use of a crown, you will have the strength of the structure to support the crown and provide you with a natural-looking replacement.

Which type of crown should I use?

While some materials are going to be more expensive than others, it is important to let your dentist choose the one that will be the most appropriate for the area where it will be placed. The choice will also depend on the importance of aesthetics and where the tooth is located. Molars that are in the back of your mouth will need to be stronger than your front teeth and will also have less of a need to look as real as those that are a part of your smile.

Are crowns permanent?

Crowns are placed with the idea of being permanent but sometimes they may have to eventually be replaced. Crowns are cemented or adhered to the tooth with adhesive and it is possible that they can come loose. Also, with rough treatment, sometimes they may become damaged and break.

Why shouldn’t I have my front teeth capped to make them look better?

While this used to be the best option for improving the appearance of chipped, crooked, or yellowing teeth, there are new methods that are less-invasive, less expensive, and which leave the tooth intact. Bonding, dental veneers, invisalign clear aligners, and teeth whitening treatments are all alternatives for improving your smile.
